This is not a hat! Confessions from a secret collector.
September 4, 2015
I cant beleive that it is now 20 years since I found the little tea cosy that sparked a whole collection... a humble little cosy in those classic 1950's colours.
It was a comforting nostelgic item that made me romanatsise about the previous decades and the ritual of tea.
So entranced by it, I had an 'exact' copy knitted from a pattern I had found subsequently. It was then that I realised the improtance of the original object....the wools and colours... the 90's were just unable to match it.
The absurdity of a young lad collecting and oommissioning Tea Cosies didn't go unnoticed. On the positive side... I did have a beavy of elderly Opshop ladies on the lookout, scouring the backrooms for me.
As I got further and further into the collection, many a double ups presented, however no two were ever quite the same. People entrusted their favourites to me, friends on the hunt.... I even encountered another like minded collector who had the South Island sewen up. (hi Vita)
It took some courage to introduce my now wife, Lou, to the collection. One drunken evening and the whole floor of our house was coverd end to end in cosies... a favourable reception I am glad to say!
The higlight of my collecting culminated in a public display at our OUi boutique gallery (2007) in Karangahape Rd and a poster featuring some of my favourites .
